Recommendations:
Recommended Computer and Camera::
PC
Computer Operating System: Windows XP, Vista or Windows
7 RAM: 512 MB RAM with XP, 1GB (
or more)
with Vista / Windows 7 Hard Drive CD/ DVD Reader (to
install software) Ports: DV (IEEE 1394 Firewire) Port or
USB2 (support import or streaming video
stream)
Camera Recommendations:
Video analysis software products, like
ASTAR and competitors, are best used with a miniDV camcorder
connected over FireWire. The Firewire connection provides a
"live video feed" from the camera or from the camera's miniDV
tape to the computer allowing the software to view and capture
it directly.
During
the last several years there has been a significant trend by
the camera manufacturers to allow the video files to be
captured and created within the camera and storing them
locally within its memory, such as SD/SDHC cards, flash
drives, hard disk drive and DVD's directly. This trend makes
it simpler for the home consumer to capture events removing
the need to have video capture software on their computers,
but more time consuming for the sports coach since most do not
support provide a live video feed to the computer via DV
(Firewire) port or Web Conferencing (video streaming) via a
USB2 port allowing the video analysis software to capture and
create the files inside the analysis
software.
Without
a DV or Web Conferencing capability, the video files created
within the camera then can be transferred to the computer via
a USB port and using the analysis software's "import" function
to bring the files into the software.
Suggested
miniDV Camcorders for use with video
analysis:
Two
key components:
-
A
direct (live) video feed from the camera to the computer via
a DV (Firewire) port or via Web Conferencing (video
streaming) thru the USB2 port. Web Conferencing software
supplied with the camera needs to be
installed.
-
Manual
shutter control (manual program mode) and optionally, the
ability to attach a wide angle lens (2X or .5 or .45
Converter) which allows the camera to be within 9-10 feet of
the student and capture full
frame.
Listed
below are some current cameras that provide DV
(Firewire) or Web Conferencing support and in some cases
support both modes:
Canon - ZR Series, HV10, HV20, HV30 or
HV40
Sony - HDR-HC7, HDR-HC9, DCR-HC42, DCR-HC52, DCR-PC101,
DCR-TRV950, DCR-HC52,
JVC
- GR-DVM96U, GR-DVL920U or GR-D230US
Panasonic - PV-GS80, PV-GS83, PV-GS85 or PV-GS320, PV-GS330,
PV-GS400, or PV-GS500
